The infrared camera can be used to demonstrate radiation in the IR range. To setup original, please contact Dayle Hancock. Using new IR camera, setup should be straightforward (10 minutes including charging)

Required Items and location:

Questions:

• Why can’t we typically see infrared light?

• (c)Infrared radiation does not have enough energy to interact with our eyes. This is also why ultraviolet radiation is dangerous - it has too much energy.
• Because it is colorless
• Because it is identical to red light, hence infrared

Flash Chamber

Compresses the air quickly by use of the plunger. If done fast enough, the cotton will partially ignite.

Required Items:

• Cotton
• Flash Chamber

Notes:

• Requires some practice to get it right

Questions:

• Why, directly, does the cotton ignite?

• Because of the force of the plunger directly on the cotton
• Due to the statistical temperature increasing
• The plunger struck a hidden flint, which ignites the air.

Sterling Engine

It’s a sterling engine. Place over a heat source such as a cup of hot water, and the engine will begin to spin.

Required Items:

• Sterling engine (located under thermodynamics shelf 4)
• Hot water

Questions:

• Do any of the following applications of this device seem viable? (ignore constraints of the engine)

• (C)Use as an energy source a short distance from the earths core
• Put it on your head, hook it up to a motor, and use it as a fan
• Send it far out into space, and have it use the near absolute-zero temperature of space as a temperature differential to generate a lot of energy

Crookes Radiometer

Small heat engine that spins due to internal temperature differences (black side absorbs more energy than white side). The bulb is not completely evacuated

Required Items:

• Crookes radiometer (located under thermodynamics shelves, shelf 5)

Conduction Wand

Place wax beads at the end of each rod of varying material. Then, place heat (such as a bunsen burner) underneath the center of the wand and observe the order in which the wax falls from each rod. (setup: 8 minutes)

Required Items:

• Wax beeds/Pith Balls
• 5-rod conductometer (located under thermodynamics shelves, shelf 5)
• Bunsen burner or other heat source (located under LN2/thermodynamics shelf 3)

Approx 15 hand heaters. Must be boiled (for example, in the pictures cooker) to restore.

Two sizes available.

Warning: High pressure propane. DO NOT open tank valve completely.

Gas thermometer. Requires LN₂ which must be acquired in advance. Ice is also required. The three temperatures are boiling water (373 K), ice water (273 K) and LN₂ (-77 K). The bulb also needs to be filled with He in advance.

Bi-metal strip Requires LN₂ which must be acquired in advance.

Ping pong balls will spin if a small hole is made in them, then filled with LN2. Balloons will shrink down, then reexpand when warmed. Ball will not fit through ring until it is coolled down.
